How do I verify a downloaded file?

Drop the file in and paste the checksum published by the provider (usually SHA-256) into Compare. A green ✓ means the file is intact and unmodified.

Is MD5 safe for passwords?

No. MD5 and SHA-1 are fine for detecting accidental corruption, but they are broken for security. Use SHA-256 or better for integrity, and a dedicated password hashing algorithm for passwords.
